Odisha govt forms high-level committee to examine teachers’ long-standing demands

In Bhubaneswar on 3 December, the Odisha Government revealed that it has constituted a senior panel headed by former IAS officer Ashok Kumar Triparthy. The panel’s job is to study the long‑standing complaints made by teachers, lecturers, and other staff at schools and universities that fall under the State’s School and Mass Education (S&ME) and Higher Education (HE) Departments. The committee will be expected to present its findings to the state government within half a year.

During a speech in the Odisha Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi explained that the state runs a mix of government, aided and unaided private schools, as well as colleges of the HE Department. He noted that educators from these institutions have repeatedly presented their grievances to the government and that, after several discussions, the CM decided to form a high‑level committee to give the issues a fresh review. The committee, chaired by Shri Ashok Kumar Tripathy (Retired IAS), is slated to report back within six months.

Earlier in September, teachers and staff from non‑government‑aided and independent schools marked Teachers’ Day as a “Black Day” to draw attention to their pending demands. In response to the new committee, Biswaranjan Das, president of the Odisha State Non‑Government Lecturers and Employees Association, expressed surprise. He pointed out that a similar committee had been formed in December of the previous year, has held four meetings with stakeholders, yet still has not produced a report. Das warned that the creation of yet another committee could be a tactic to delay progress and mislead educators.
