A tragic accident in Mumbai has cast a shadow over Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, leaving one person dead and five others injured, including two children. The incident occurred on Sunday during an immersion procession on Khairani Road in the Sakinaka area.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a high-tension wire fell onto a Ganapati trolley as the Gajanan Mitra Mandal’s procession was passing near the Sanman Hotel. Six people received a severe electric shock when they tried to lift the wire off the decorated trolley.
Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Five of the victims were admitted to Paramount Hospital in Sakinaka, where officials report they are now in stable condition. Sadly, a 37-year-old man, identified as Binu Sukumaran, a local resident of Gilbert Compound on Khairani Road, was pronounced dead after being taken to Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri East.
The injured have been named as Dharmaraj Sukhdev Gupta (49), Aarush Ashok Gupta (6), Tushar Dinesh Gupta (20), Shambhu Navnath Kami (20), and Karan Vinod Kanojia (14).
This heartbreaking event is part of a worrying pattern of accidents during Ganesh immersion processions across India this season. Just this week, in a similar tragedy in Vijayapura, Karnataka, a 21-year-old man named Shivaji Sakpal died on the spot after coming into contact with a live wire. Two others were seriously injured in that incident.
Additionally, last week in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district, a tractor carrying devotees overturned during the celebrations, resulting in four fatalities and one critical injury. These repeated incidents are raising serious concerns about public safety during major religious festivals.
