Outrage across political parties over attack on CJI Gavai; leaders condemn “assault on judiciary”

New Delhi, India – A shocking incident at the Supreme Court on Monday sparked widespread outrage across the political spectrum. A lawyer allegedly tried to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India (CJI), B R Gavai, during court proceedings. The act was seen as an assault on the judiciary and the Constitution.
Security officers reacted swiftly, stopping the attempt and ensuring the courtroom remained safe. The Supreme Court administration will release an official statement after it reviews the security breach.
National leaders condemn the attack
Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party’s senior leader, called the event “an assault on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution.” He urged that such hatred have no place in India, posting the message on X.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the attempt as shameful, unfortunate, and alarming. She said the attack on the CJI struck at the heart of the judicial system and the rule of law. “It is a smack against the entire judiciary and democracy,” she added.
Supriya Shrinate expressed disbelief that a lawyer could enter the Apex Court and try to hurl an item at the CJI. She urged punishment for the offender and warned that the act could be linked to the attacker’s Dalit background.
Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the incident strongly. “Immediate legal action must be taken against the unruly lawyer who tried to insult both the Chief Justice and the judiciary,” he said on X.
In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin called the event “shameful.” He noted that the CJI’s calm response shows the strength of the institution, but the incident itself could not be taken lightly. He highlighted how the attacker’s motive exposes societal intolerance.
Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan linked the incident to a growing climate of intolerance. He condemned the attack as a “reflection of the hatred spread by the Sangh Parivar” and warned that dismissing it as an isolated act ignores the rising divisiveness in society.
Supreme Court Bar Association responds
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) released a resolution condemning the advocate’s disruptive conduct. The association described the act as “reprehensible” and expressed deep shock at the breach of courtroom decorum and professional ethics. It warned that such behaviour undermines public trust in the justice system and threatens the foundation of respect between Bench and Bar.
The SCBA’s statement also called for stronger measures to prevent future disruptions and protect the independence of the judiciary.

The Supreme Court will soon issue a detailed statement addressing the security lapse. The government will likely investigate the lawyer’s actions and consider legal consequences. The incident has intensified calls for tighter security protocols within the Court and reaffirmed the need for respect toward the judiciary.
