Tripura’s government has poured over Rs 303 crore into upgrading agriculture markets over the past seven years, aiming to lift farmers’ incomes and secure their future. Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared this update while cutting the ribbon on a new market building at Barpathari Agri Produce Market in southern Tripura.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, both state and central governments have rolled out key initiatives to support farmers and ensure they get the respect they deserve. “Farmers now receive fair treatment and real prices for their produce,” Nath said.
Tripura boasts 554 agriculture markets today, including 84 wholesale ones and 21 specialized agri produce markets. Nath pointed out the stark difference from the past: the previous Left Front government spent just Rs 20.26 crore in seven years, but since the BJP took power in 2018, investments have jumped to Rs 303 crore. “No farmer can claim they lack a market anymore,” he added. “This is what Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas—development for all—truly means.”
Big plans are in motion for these 21 agri produce markets. They’ll soon join the E-NAM platform, letting farmers store their goods and sell online for better prices. Seven markets are already online: Panisagar, Pabiachara, Kulai, Teiamura, Mohanpur, Sonamura, and Santirbazar.
More upgrades are coming to spots like Dasda, Kalaynapur, Bachaibari, Champaknagar, Bishalgarh, Jampuijala, Melaghar, Natun Bazar, Ganda Twisa, Chamanu, and Garjee. Nath stressed how farmers’ respect has grown: “Without farmers, we have no food. They are like gods, so we honor them with importance and support.”
He highlighted India’s agricultural turnaround—from relying on food imports to becoming the world’s second-largest paddy producer. “Now we export paddy to other countries, thanks to our farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of Tripura and India.”
Nath also touched on broader progress under Modi, like providing homes and clean drinking water to everyone. The event drew Cooperation Minister Sukla Charan Noatia, Rajnagar MLA Swapna Majumder, South Tripura District Zilla Sabhadhipati Dipak Datta, and other local leaders.
