On Tuesday morning, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel in New Delhi will convene to set its agenda for the year and pick the topics it will examine. The BJP MP Anurag Thakur leads the 29‑member panel that includes 21 sitters from the Lok Sabha and eight from the Rajya Sabha, with two seats still open.
The committee will finalize Memorandum No 1, which outlines the subjects to cover during the 2025‑2026 term. It also will review its overall work plan for the upcoming year.
Last week the group sat with officials from the Ministry of Steel to discuss the organisational structure and performance of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL). A report presented earlier this month, on the government’s response to the committee’s 2023 recommendations about steel grants, already set the tone for this term.
In August, the committee released an eight‑page report on India’s steel scrap recycling policy. It urged the creation of a dedicated online portal that would track every detail of scrap generation, usage, import and export. The report also called on the ministry of steel to lead the data collection effort.
The committee is part of a broader re‑formation of parliamentary oversight that took place on 2 October, when the Lok Sabha reconstituted several standing and select committees for a new year.
Since its first formation in 1993 and a reshuffle in 2004, the Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel has overseen grant demands, examined bills referred by the Speaker or Chairman, and reviewed annual ministry reports and long‑term policy documents. Its work remains central to shaping India’s energy, mining and steel policy and ensuring the sector’s sustainable growth.
