A Delhi court has sent Chaitanyananda Saraswati, also known as Parthasarathy, to 14 days of judicial custody in a shocking sexual harassment case involving female students. The decision came from Patiala House Court on Friday, as police continue their probe into the allegations.
Saraswati faces accusations of molesting 17 students at the Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area. He got arrested at a hotel in Agra, where he tried to hide using his old name. Now, the court wants Delhi Police to respond to his requests for items like a seizure memo, access to the case diary, and special Sanyasi food, clothing, medicines, and books.
The investigation has uncovered plenty of evidence pointing to his deceptive ways. On Wednesday, a search at the institute turned up a sex toy, five CDs with alleged pornographic content, and three fake photos showing Saraswati posing with big names like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US President Barack Obama, and a UK leader. Police also raided spots in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar and Almora, plus other hideouts he used while on the run, to build a stronger case.
Earlier in the week, officers found two bogus visiting cards on him—one claiming he was a Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations, the other saying he served on the BRICS Joint Commission as India’s Special Envoy. These props likely helped him trick people.
Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police for South West, Amit Goel, told reporters that Saraswati targeted the students with job promises, using his fake influence to lure them. “A detailed investigation is underway,” Goel said. “We’re gathering evidence on all the allegations. Three women were close to him from the start, and we’re checking their roles. He may have preyed on many more victims this way.” Goel added that Saraswati dodged direct calls by using an international number, and his phone held lewd chats and photos of women, revealing a clear pattern of predatory behavior.
It all started with a complaint on August 4 at Vasant Kunj North Police Station. An institute administrator reported sexual harassment against female students in the PGDM program under the EWS scholarship scheme. Police took statements from 32 women, and 17 described abusive language, obscene WhatsApp and SMS messages, and unwanted physical touches from Saraswati. Some said female faculty and administrators pushed them to go along with his demands.
Officers registered the sexual harassment case against him on September 23. In a related move, the Sri Sharada Peetham in Sringeri has canceled the Powers of Attorney it gave him back in 2008, cutting all ties.
As the Delhi police sexual harassment probe deepens, more details could emerge about how Saraswati exploited his position at the institute. Stay tuned for updates on this student molestation case.
