PM Modi’s Kolkata Visit: Warm Welcome and Big Defence Conference Ahead
Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Kolkata on Sunday evening after wrapping up his two-day tour of Northeast India. He landed at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport around 6:45 p.m., where Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER, Sukanta Majumdar, greeted him with a warm welcome.
Modi had spent the first part of Sunday in Assam before flying to West Bengal’s capital. He’ll spend the night at Raj Bhavan, the Governor’s residence in central Kolkata.
The excitement was electric as BJP workers and supporters gathered outside the airport, beating drums and cheering loudly for their leader. Spotting the crowd’s energy, PM Modi halted his convoy, stepped out of his car, and waved enthusiastically to everyone. His motorcade then made its way smoothly to Raj Bhavan through the bustling city streets.
On Monday, things get even bigger. PM Modi will kick off the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference 2025 at Fort William, the headquarters of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command. This high-profile event brings together India’s top military brass, civilian leaders, and defence experts to discuss strategies for a stronger, future-ready armed forces.
The conference, held every two years, runs from September 15 to 17 in Kolkata. This year’s theme, ‘Year of Reforms – Transforming for the Future’, spotlights key areas like military reforms, deeper integration across services, technological upgrades, and boosting operational readiness. Leaders will brainstorm ways to keep the Indian Armed Forces agile and decisive amid fast-changing global challenges.
Joining PM Modi will be heavyweights like Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and top officials from various ministries. Officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Integrated Defence Staff will also dive into the discussions. Both Rajnath Singh and Ajit Doval arrived in Kolkata on Sunday evening to gear up for the event.
PM Modi’s schedule on Monday starts at 9:30 a.m. with a visit to the Vijay Durga memorial at Fort William. He’ll inaugurate the conference and address the gathering, with sessions likely wrapping up by 1 p.m. After that, he’ll head to the airport at 1:40 p.m. and fly out to Bihar.
To ensure smooth movement during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kolkata, the city traffic police has rolled out restrictions. Goods vehicles face curbs on major roads from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, on top of regular rules. Affected routes include VIP Road, Ultadanga New Flyover, EM Bypass, Maa Flyover, AJC Bose Flyover, AJC Bose Road, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Khidderpore Road, J&N Island, Red Road, RR Avenue, and Raj Bhavan South Gate.
This visit highlights PM Modi’s focus on defence reforms and Northeast development, drawing huge crowds and setting the stage for important talks on India’s security future.
