In Dhalai district’s Kamalpur subdivision, a violent outbreak on Thursday left 12 people injured and several shops damaged. Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha slammed the attackers and promised harsh punishment.
Chief Minister vows no one will escape justice
Saha visited the Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala to check on three wounded victims – BDO Abhijit Majumdar, engineer Animesh Saha, and trader Subrata Paul. He said the police were instructed to take “strict action” against those who used sticks, iron rods and slingshots to target businessmen and even snatched chains from women.
“We have seen what happened, and I will not let anyone walk free,” Saha told reporters. He added that the state police had already deployed heavy security forces and that the law would “take its own course.”
Injuries and treatment
Twelve people were hurt in the clash. Three were brought to Agartala for treatment; the other nine, including Sub‑Divisional Police Officer Samudra Debbarma, remain in Kamalpur’s Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital.
Political leaders unite against the violence
Across party lines, leaders condemned the attack. Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar accused Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS), a tribal group, of targeting businessmen for opposing a shutdown. BJP and Congress leaders, along with CPI‑M and opposition figures, also visited the hospital and called for accountability.
The backdrop: TCS and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council
The violence followed a 24‑hour statewide shutdown called by TCS, led by TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma. The group demanded:
- Deportation of illegal migrants
- An Inner Line Permit (ILP) to limit non‑tribal settlement
- Enforcement of a 2023 tripartite agreement between the Centre, Tripura, and TMP
TCS is linked to the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which governs the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and holds 13 seats in the state cabinet. The TMP’s demands have intensified tensions over migration and tribal rights.
Looking ahead
The state government is working to repair damaged shops in Santirbazar, with the District Magistrate ordered to assess damages. Officials say the situation is being closely monitored and that any repeat of the violence will be met with swift legal action.
The incident underscores the growing dispute over tribal land, migrant settlements, and the need for clear security and policy measures in Tripura.
