Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is “saddened” by the deadly crash that took 18 lives in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district. The tragedy happened near the Matoda area, about 160 km from Jodhpur, when a tempo‑traveller bus full of devotees collided with a stationary trailer truck.
The bus was returning from Kolayat in Bikaner after a religious event. Police report that the front of the bus was smashed, trapping many passengers inside. Rescue workers and local volunteers rushed to the scene, pulled out the injured, and sent them to nearby hospitals.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the PM Office announced that each family of a deceased passenger will receive an ex‑gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The injured will receive ₹50 000. Modi also sent his thoughts to the families and prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma posted his own condolences, saying the loss was “extremely tragic and heart‑rending.” He told district officials to give urgent medical care to all injured people.
Police have opened a case and are investigating the crash. Officials will mechanically examine both vehicles to determine whether brake failure, driver fatigue, poor visibility, or high speed caused the collision.
The accident has shocked the state and raised questions about road safety in Rajasthan’s highway network. Search engines and locals alike are looking for updates as investigators work to uncover the exact cause.
