PM Modi holds bilateral talks with Mauritius PM Ramgoolam in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi today for key talks aimed at boosting India-Mauritius relations. The two leaders focused on deepening their Enhanced Strategic Partnership, built on shared history, culture, and strong people-to-people ties.
Ramgoolam is on an eight-day visit to India, and Varanasi—known for its ancient spiritual vibes—serves as the perfect backdrop to highlight the deep civilisational and spiritual connections between the two nations. Earlier, Ramgoolam chatted with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri about their multifaceted bilateral partnership. The Ministry of External Affairs shared on X: “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called on PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius today in Varanasi. Discussed multifaceted partnership and reaffirmed commitment in strengthening India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership anchored in shared history, culture & people-to-people ties.”
During the bilateral meeting, Modi and Ramgoolam reviewed their full range of cooperation. They put special emphasis on development projects and capacity building, while eyeing fresh opportunities in healthcare, education, science and technology, energy, and infrastructure. Key areas like renewable energy, digital public infrastructure, and the blue economy got extra attention, reflecting Mauritius’s role as a vital Indian Ocean partner.
This summit builds on the momentum from Modi’s March visit to Mauritius, where both countries upgraded their ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. As a close maritime neighbor, Mauritius supports India’s MAHASAGAR Vision for regional security and growth, along with the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. Their collaboration also boosts the Global South’s shared goals for prosperity and sustainability.
At a business conclave in Maharashtra yesterday, Ramgoolam called India-Mauritius ties unbreakable. He described Mauritius as India’s most reliable partner and highlighted massive business potential between them.
The bond dates back to 1948, when India established diplomatic relations with Mauritius even before its independence. Ramgoolam last visited in 2014 as the only non-SAARC leader invited to Modi’s swearing-in. The Ministry of External Affairs notes that high-level trust and political engagement have always defined this special relationship.
Overall, the Varanasi talks promise to mark a new chapter in India-Mauritius relations, paving the way for mutual growth, sustainable development, and a brighter future together.
