Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought big cheers to Mizoram on Saturday by inaugurating the much-awaited Bairabi-Sairang railway project, connecting Aizawl to the rail network as the fourth Northeast capital after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. This 51.38-km line is a game-changer for the region, and PM Modi didn’t stop there—he laid foundation stones for several development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore and flagged off three new trains to boost connectivity.
Right after the railway launch, PM Modi kicked off the new services: the weekly Sairang-Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express, the tri-weekly Kolkata-Sairang-Kolkata Express, and the daily Guwahati-Sairang-Guwahati Express. These trains promise easier travel for locals, linking Mizoram to major cities and opening up new opportunities.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who reached Aizawl a day earlier, shared exciting details about the Bairabi-Sairang project. Built at a whopping Rs 8,070 crore, it tackled tough challenges like 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges. “This railway line will transform lives in Mizoram,” Vaishnaw said, highlighting how the Modi government has ramped up Northeast railway funding from just Rs 2,000 crore before 2014 to five times that amount.
Railway officials are thrilled about the impact. Better rail connectivity in Mizoram means quicker access to hospitals, universities, and markets, fostering stronger educational, cultural, and economic bonds across the Northeast. Expect more jobs, a tourism boom, and smoother daily life for residents.
PM Modi also gave a major push to road infrastructure. He laid the foundation for the 45-km Aizawl Bypass Road, costing over Rs 500 crore under the PM-DevINE scheme. This project will ease traffic jams in Aizawl, improve links to Lunglei, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lengpui Airport, and the new Sairang Railway Station. Travel time from southern districts to Aizawl will drop by about 1.5 hours, making commutes a breeze.
Then there’s the Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS). It will help horticulture farmers, dragon fruit growers, paddy farmers, and ginger processors by connecting better to the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei Highway. In Serchhip district, the Khankawn-Rongura Road will open up markets for local farmers and support a new ginger processing plant.
Adding to the wins, PM Modi started work on the Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai-Siaha Road. This bridge ensures all-weather access, cuts travel time by two hours, and boosts cross-border trade via the Kaladan Multimodal Transit project.
Sports enthusiasts got good news too with the foundation stone for the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Tuikual. This modern facility, complete with an indoor arena, will train Mizoram’s youth for national and international competitions, nurturing the next generation of athletes.
On the energy front, PM Modi launched the 30 TMTPA LPG Bottling Plant at Mualkhang in Aizawl. It guarantees a reliable supply of clean cooking fuel for Mizoram and nearby states, plus it creates local jobs.
Education took center stage as well. The Prime Minister inaugurated a Residential School at Kawrthah under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) in the aspirational Mamit district. With modern classrooms, hostels, and even an artificial football turf, it will benefit over 10,000 children and youth, paving the way for better social and educational growth.
Finally, the Eklavya Model Residential School at Tlangnuam got the green light. Aimed at tribal youth, it focuses on holistic education to boost enrollment, cut dropouts, and build a brighter future for Mizoram’s young talents.
These initiatives show the government’s commitment to Northeast development, blending rail, road, energy, sports, and education for real progress in Mizoram.
