PM Modi pays tribute to freedom fighter Parvati Giri in ‘Mann Ki Baat’; Odisha CM expresses gratitude
Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his 129th “Mann Ki Baat” address to honour the late Odia freedom fighter Parvati Giri, announcing that the nation will mark her 100th birth anniversary in January 2026.
During the broadcast, Modi reminded listeners that the country is soon to celebrate its 77th Republic Day. He reflected on the long road to independence, expressing deep gratitude for the sacrifices of freedom fighters who helped draft the Constitution. While acknowledging that people from every corner of India contributed to the struggle, he noted that many of those heroes have not received the recognition they deserve.
“One such freedom fighter is Parvati Giri ji of Odisha,” he said. “She joined the Quit India movement at just 16 and, after independence, devoted her life to social service and tribal welfare, establishing several orphanages. Her inspiring legacy will continue to guide future generations.” Modi added that the nation must keep the stories of these unsung heroes alive.
He recalled that when India celebrated 75 years of independence, the government launched a special website featuring a section titled “Unsung Heroes.” “You can still visit that site today to learn about the people who played pivotal roles in our freedom,” he said.
In response, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed pride in the tribute on the same “Mann Ki Baat” episode. On his X account, CM Majhi thanked the Prime Minister for honoring Parvati Giri, describing her as one of Odisha’s great freedom fighters who dedicated her life to serving the poor and marginalised. He added that remembering this “Agnikanya” of Odisha fills the entire state with pride.
The salute to Giri underscores the government’s commitment to celebrating and preserving the memories of India’s lesser‑known heroes.
