PM Modi reiterates call to adopt ‘Swadeshi’, urges people to buy Khadi products on Oct 2

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an inspiring message during the 126th episode of his popular radio show Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, urging Indians to embrace "Swadeshi" products this Gandhi Jayanti and feel proud of their local roots.

With October 2 marking Gandhi Jayanti, Modi highlighted how Mahatma Gandhi championed Swadeshi, especially Khadi fabrics. He noted that after India’s Independence, Khadi’s popularity had dimmed, but the last 11 years have brought a big turnaround. "Khadi sales have surged like never before," Modi said, pointing to growing national interest in these traditional textiles.

He encouraged everyone to take action: "On October 2, pick up at least one Khadi item. Declare with pride, ‘This is Swadeshi!’ Then share your choice on social media using the hashtag #VocalForLocal." This simple step, he explained, supports local artisans and boosts India’s self-reliance.

Modi also spotlighted the exciting shifts in India’s handloom and handicraft sectors, where blending age-old traditions with fresh ideas leads to remarkable success. "When we mix heritage with innovation, the results are truly amazing," he said.

One standout story comes from Yaazh Naturals in Tamil Nadu. Founders Ashok Jagdishan and Prem Selvaraj ditched their corporate careers to create eco-friendly products. They craft yoga mats from natural grass and banana fibers, dye fabrics with herbal colors, and have trained and employed 200 families in the process. Their work shows how sustainable innovation can transform lives.

In Jharkhand, entrepreneur Ashish Satyavrat Sahu has put tribal weaving and garments on the world map through his Johargram brand. "His efforts have introduced Jharkhand’s rich cultural heritage to people abroad," Modi praised, emphasizing the global reach of local crafts.

Then there’s Sweety Kumari from Bihar’s Madhubani district, who launched Sankalp Creations to turn traditional Mithila paintings into a source of income for women. Today, more than 500 rural women have joined her initiative, gaining skills and stepping toward financial independence.

These real-life examples, Modi concluded, prove that India’s traditions offer endless opportunities for earning a living. "With strong determination, success is within reach," he added, inspiring listeners to explore and support their own communities.
