Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Surat International Airport this weekend and flew by helicopter to inspect the new Surat Bullet Train Station. The stop‑over was part of a larger review of India’s first high‑speed rail line, the 508‑km Mumbai‑Ahmedabad corridor that is set to cut travel time between the two metros to about two hours.
The Surat station—one of the flagship points on the route—is designed to echo the city’s famous diamond trade. Standing 26.3 metres tall with 58,000 square metres of built‑up area, the three‑level structure will house parking and security checks on the ground floor, a departure lounge and ticketing area on the concourse level, and boarding platforms on the top level. While the main shell is finished, interior finishing and station amenities are still in progress. Track work, including reinforced concrete track‑beds and temporary rails, has also reached completion at the site.
Modi’s visit focused on progress throughout the corridor. Gujarat and Dadra & Nagaria Haveli cover 352 km of the line, while Maharashtra adds the remaining 156 km. The route will link key cities—Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane and Mumbai—boosting inter‑city mobility and economic integration.
According to the National High‑Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL), more than 85 % of the 508‑km track sits on elevated viaducts, with 326 km already complete. River bridge construction is well advanced: 17 of 25 bridges are finished. The 47‑km Surat‑Bilimora stretch is among the most developed, with civil works and track‑bed preparation completed.
Modi’s on‑site review underscores the central government’s push to fast‑track large infrastructure projects. When operational, the MAHSR corridor will not only link cities faster but also position India alongside nations with mature high‑speed rail networks, driving regional development and connectivity.
