Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the 16th Combined Commanders Conference (CCC) in Kolkata on Monday, diving deep into India’s security challenges and the Armed Forces’ readiness. Held every two years, this top-level meet brings together military bigwigs and civilian leaders to brainstorm on strengthening India’s defence strategy.
During the session, PM Modi got updates on how the forces are handling the “new normal” after Operation Sindoor—a key success that showcased their sharp operational skills. He also discussed the future of warfare, factoring in cutting-edge tech and evolving tactics. Modi reviewed defence reforms from the past two years and mapped out plans for the next couple, pushing for more joint operations, self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta), and innovation to tackle any threats head-on.
Praising the Armed Forces, Modi highlighted their stellar role in Operation Sindoor, nation-building efforts, anti-piracy missions, evacuating Indians from war zones, and delivering humanitarian aid and disaster relief to allies. With 2025 declared the Year of Reforms in defence, he urged the Ministry of Defence to roll out quick, solid steps for greater integration and tech upgrades.
Key attendees included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Others present were Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Ex-servicemen Welfare) Dr Niten Chandra, DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat, and Financial Advisor (Defence Services) Dr Mayank Sharma.
The conference, themed “Year of Reforms – Transformation for the Future,” aligns perfectly with the ongoing push for modernizing India’s Armed Forces. Over the next two days, leaders will review structural changes, admin tweaks, and operational readiness amid global tensions. They’ll also chalk out a roadmap to bring PM Modi’s vision to life, focusing on reforms, transformation, and staying battle-ready in a tricky world.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will speak to the commanders on September 16, followed by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on September 17. True to tradition, the event includes interactive chats with officers from all ranks, making sure ground-level insights shape the big decisions. This holistic approach aims to build an agile, tech-savvy force ready for any geo-strategic curveballs.
