PM Modi slams Congress for 26/11 response, says UPA “gave message of weakness”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the former Congress‑led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, saying it displayed weakness after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He highlighted how his BJP government placed national security above all else and took firm action against Pakistan in response to the attacks.

Modi referenced an interview in which senior Congress politician P Chidambaram, who served as Home Minister after 2008, said the UPA considered retaliation against Pakistan but chose restraint under global pressure. The Prime Minister asked Congress to explain who made the decision to hold Indian forces back, claiming citizens deserve to know the truth.

He stressed that Mumbai is not only India’s commercial hub but also a major cultural city—an attractive target for terrorists. Modi said the then government’s perceived surrender sent the wrong signal and emboldened attackers, costing lives and safety.

India’s current security posture, Modi said, is clear: “No one is more important than the safety of our people.” He referenced recent operations, such as “Operation Sindoor,” to illustrate India’s readiness to act against threats. The world witnessed the country’s strong response, and citizens can feel pride.

Earlier the same day, Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport and unveiled new developmental projects across Mumbai, reaffirming his commitment to the city’s growth and safety.
