Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to the nation at 5 p.m. on Sunday, sources say. People are buzzing with guesses about what he’ll cover, especially as it comes right before big changes to India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) kick in on Monday.
Many expect Modi to dive into the details of GST 2.0 reforms. These updates aim to cut taxes on everyday items and make life easier for families and small businesses. Back on August 15, during his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, Modi promised these “next-generation GST reforms” as a Diwali gift. He said they would lower the tax burden on common people and boost the economy by slashing rates on essentials.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman backed this up on September 4, announcing that the GST Council approved the package. The changes include dropping taxes on things like packaged foods and consumer electronics. Overall, it simplifies the system toward a cleaner two-rate setup, helping traders and sparking more consumer spending.
But GST might not be the only topic. Modi could address the recent U.S. crackdown on H-1B visas, which hits hard for thousands of Indian tech workers there. He might also touch on India’s tariff tensions with Washington. And don’t be surprised if he pushes the “Swadeshi” call and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” self-reliance drive again.
This will be Modi’s first nationwide address since May 12, when he explained Operation Sindoor—India’s response to a terror attack in Pahalgam.
