Airport vid exposes ‘creepy’ way women are being secretly filmed

A woman from Tampa, Florida, has warned everyone after discovering that someone had captured a video of her at an airport without her permission.

Lauren Britt revealed the unsettling reality that women can be secretly filmed in everyday places, sparking shock across social media over how simple it is for a stranger to intrude on a woman’s privacy.

The incident happened when she was waiting in a lounge for a flight to Boston. A man she didn’t know approached her and struck up a casual conversation. For all intents and purposes, nothing out of the ordinary occurred—until a hidden camera recorded the entire exchange and the clip later appeared online.

Her brother spotted the video being shared on Instagram, prompting Lauren to share it herself so others could see how the man managed to film her without her realizing it.

She described the moment in a video she posted on TikTok: “Here I am, minding my business at the airport, and this guy starts to talk to me,” she said, pointing out how the footage was captured.

The first generation of glasses with built‑in cameras entered the market in 2012, but it’s only in recent years that they’ve started to catch on. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, introduced its Ray‑Ban Meta AI glasses in 2024. These vision‑assisted glasses help people with low vision read text and identify objects, while also featuring cameras, speakers and a microphone.

Despite their helpful purpose, the new glasses are already falling into the hands of people with less noble intentions. Lauren wrapped up her TikTok clip by asking, “Is that creepy? He never asked.”

Women have long been subject to covert filming while going about their daily routines, but the discreet nature of smart glasses raises fresh concerns about how effortlessly a man can record an unaware woman.

Other incidents reinforce these fears. A woman in Sydney was secretly filmed by an American content creator who used the same glasses. The footage, which quickly spread to the creator’s 1.3 million Instagram followers, was described by the woman as “violating and disgusting.” She recounted, “I was just strolling along, reading the news, but when I looked up, I saw that a man was about to approach me.”

She added that the man had been fiddling with the glasses before the encounter—“I just thought he was adjusting them. Now I realize he was probably starting the recording because there were two dots on either side, but it was very subtle.”

In Australia, laws vary by state. New South Wales’ Surveillance Devices Act allows up to five years in prison for covertly recording a conversation without consent, while other regions protect privacy under a Human Rights Act. However, the legality of recording in public places, such as airports or streets, is more ambiguous.

The trend has made many women uneasy. Comments on Lauren’s TikTok clip highlighted the sheer invulnerability that these devices seem to afford, with users exclaiming, “DUDE WTAF?!” and “That’s such an invasion of privacy.” Others noted, “The glasses are more scary than AI right now,” and a follower vowed, “I’m not going to talk to any man in glasses again.”

In the U.S., a TikToker known as @itspolokid (Sayed) drew criticism for filming women in bikinis on an Australian beach, allegedly to flirt or ask for contact details. While the NSW Police investigated, no charges were ultimately filed. Nonetheless, the platform has taken action, permanently banning him for violating user‑privacy guidelines.

These stories underscore a growing concern: that advances in wearable technology may facilitate privacy violations on an unprecedented scale.
