PM Modi trying to do ‘whitewash job’ for RSS: CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat

In New Delhi, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent speech at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) centenary event. She accused him of trying to gloss over the RSS’s complete absence from India’s freedom struggle.

“A leopard can’t change its spots, no matter how much you wash it,” Karat told on Thursday. “The Prime Minister is doing a whitewash job on the fact that the RSS had absolutely nothing to do with the freedom struggle.”

The day before, at the RSS’s 100-year celebrations in the national capital, PM Modi had nothing but praise for the organization. He highlighted its deep roots in nation-building and how it has shaped countless lives over the decades.

“Just as human civilizations flourish along the banks of mighty rivers, hundreds of lives have blossomed and thrived along the banks and in the flow of the RSS,” Modi said. “Since its formation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has pursued a grand objective: nation-building.”

Modi also shared his thoughts on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s address the next day. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, he called it inspiring. “An inspiring address by Param Pujya Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat Ji,” Modi wrote. “It highlights the rich contributions of the RSS to nation-building and emphasizes the innate potential of our land to attain new heights of glory, benefiting our entire planet.”

During his annual Vijayadashami speech in Nagpur, Bhagwat focused on building strong individual character and the key role of the RSS’s Shakha system. This daily gathering helps foster discipline and values among members, creating citizens who contribute to society.

Bhagwat pointed out how foreign invasions had wrecked systems for personal growth in Indian society. “The system for creating individuals was destroyed during the long period of foreign invasion,” he said. “The Sangh Shakha is such a system. For the past 100 years, Sangh Karyakartas have consistently sustained it in all kinds of circumstances. We must continue this in the future.”

He urged RSS volunteers, or Swayamsevaks, to join daily Shakha activities to build better habits. “The Shakha exists to nurture individual and collective qualities and spirit,” Bhagwat added. “It creates a favorable atmosphere for better basic human values and solidarity within society, while actively engaging in social activities.”
