Police Commemoration Day: Rajnath Singh hails personnel for ‘protecting society’s integrity’

New Delhi – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh solemnly honored Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial, paying tribute to the brave policemen who gave their lives in 1959. At Hot Springs in Ladakh, ten officers were trapped and killed by a heavy Chinese ambush. Since then, every year the Indian police remember their sacrifice.
During the ceremony, Singh spoke to police officers and the gathered crowd, saying: “Today we remember the supreme sacrifices of our police and paramilitary forces. I pay my tribute to those who fell on the line of duty to protect our citizens.” He highlighted the partnership between society and the police, stressing that a community can only prosper when security, justice, and trust are strong. “The police can work effectively only if society respects the law and cooperates with them,” he added.
Singh made a clear distinction between external and internal security. “The Armed Forces and Coast Guard guard our borders, but it is the police who secure our cities and towns,” he explained. Both forces, he said, are pillars of India’s safety. Whether the threat comes from outside or inside, the mission remains the same: protect the nation.
He also tied the day’s reflections to India’s future goals. “Balancing external and internal security is more important now as we move toward Amritkaal and Viksit Bharat 2047,” Singh noted. “Crime today is multi‑dimensional – it attacks lives, property, privacy, identity and trust.” He praised the police for tackling both physical crime and the perception of safety, performing their moral duty alongside official responsibilities.
“People can sleep soundly at night because they know the Armed Forces defend our borders and the police patrol our roads and neighborhoods,” Singh said. The defense minister concluded that citizens trust the police to stand with them whenever something goes wrong.
The event underscored the vital role of police in maintaining internal security and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect India’s integrity at every level.
