Kerala Protests Heat Up as Priyanka Gandhi Boosts Local Development in Wayanad
In a lively turn of events in Kochi, Kerala police detained members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress party, on Tuesday. The group was holding a strong protest outside the Commissioner of Police’s office, raising their voices against the worsening law and order situation in Kerala. This demonstration highlights growing concerns among youth about safety and security in the state.
Shifting gears to positive action, Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra brought some cheer to the Ambalavayal gram panchayat. She inaugurated a brand-new Smart Anganwadi centre on the same day, a modern facility aimed at supporting early childhood education and care for local kids. Priyanka didn’t stop there—she warmly greeted villagers, shook hands, and chatted with them about how the Anganwadi would benefit their families. The excitement was palpable as locals broke into joyful dances right after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
This Smart Anganwadi project got its funding from the Aspirational Districts Programme (ADP), run by NITI Aayog. The initiative targets India’s most underdeveloped districts, empowering states to drive change. It zeroes in on each area’s strengths, tackles urgent needs, and tracks progress through monthly rankings. Priyanka Gandhi’s hands-on approach shows her commitment to uplifting Wayanad, one of these focus areas.
During her ongoing 10-day visit to the constituency—which kicked off last Friday—Priyanka has been busy launching community projects left and right. Just the day before, on Monday, she unveiled a vital drinking water project in Mylukunnu and Panamaram villages. This effort falls under the MPLADS scheme, where MPs like her get Rs 5 crore each year to fund local development works that make a real difference.
She also made time for the Priyadarshini Tea factory in Mananthavady, where she met and talked with workers, getting a firsthand look at their daily lives. Earlier on Sunday, Priyanka visited the Bishop House in Thamarassery to meet Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil. In a heartfelt chat, they discussed key local issues like better representation for their community in Parliament and the ongoing man-animal conflicts plaguing the region.
Bishop Remigiose later shared with reporters that it was a personal visit at Priyanka’s request. "We talked about personal matters, but I did bring up our challenges," he said. He highlighted the urgent need for the MP to voice the struggles of poor villagers in Parliament, especially the dangers from wildlife. "We live just 10 km from the forest, and elephants or tigers often attack us. A tiger even killed a man recently," the bishop added, stressing how these conflicts disrupt lives in Wayanad.
Priyanka Gandhi’s visit underscores her focus on grassroots development and listening to the people of Wayanad, blending community engagement with real solutions for Kerala’s pressing issues.
