Police register murder case in death of Jadavpur University student

Mystery Surrounds Jadavpur University Student’s Death: Murder Case Filed

In a shocking turn of events at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University, police have registered a murder case after the mysterious drowning of a third-year English Literature student. The complaint came straight from the grieving father, who suspects foul play in his daughter’s tragic death on September 11.

The student’s parents wasted no time seeking justice. On Monday morning, they first headed to Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, where they met Commissioner Manoj Verma. From there, they went to Jadavpur Police Station to file the official complaint, kicking off the murder investigation.

Speaking to reporters outside the station, the father shared his heartbreak and doubts. "My daughter was terrified of the dark and would never go near the water alone," he said. "Someone must have lured her there with an offer she refused, leading to her being pushed in. She couldn’t swim, so suicide doesn’t make sense." His words have added fuel to the growing suspicion around the Jadavpur University student death case.

Police are now zeroing in on seven fellow students as key suspects. They summoned the group for questioning on Sunday, grilling three of them already and recording their statements. The rest will face detectives later this week. Sources reveal that the first people to pull the student from the campus water body were her close friends—making their accounts crucial to the probe.

Investigators are digging deep, including a close look at the deceased student’s mobile phone. They’re poring over call details to figure out who she spoke to right before the incident. Every clue counts in unraveling this Kolkata student drowning mystery.

Here’s what happened that fateful night: Around 10 pm on September 11, the third-year student’s body was found in a water body on the Jadavpur University campus. At the time, a cultural program by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI)—the student wing of CPI(M)—was underway nearby. The event halted immediately as news spread, and the body was rushed to KPC Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead on arrival.

The initial post-mortem report confirms drowning as the cause of death, with no visible injuries on the body. But questions linger—did alcohol or drugs play a role? Police are waiting for the detailed viscera report to check for toxins, which could take time. For now, the autopsy doesn’t confirm if she was intoxicated.

In response to the heartbreaking Jadavpur University student death, campus authorities have ramped up security. A late Friday circular bans trespassing, morning or evening walks, narcotics, alcohol use, and entry without valid ID cards. These steps aim to prevent similar tragedies and ensure safety for everyone on campus.

As the investigation unfolds, the Jadavpur community mourns the loss of a bright young student. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story—police promise a thorough probe to uncover the truth behind the mystery.
