Police-run temple in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur draws huge crowds during Navratri

In the heart of Bihar’s Muzaffarpur, a special Durga temple run entirely by police officers has turned into a buzzing hotspot for devotees during this year’s Navratri celebrations. Nestled at BNP-6 Malighat, the temple draws crowds who come to honor Goddess Durga amid the vibrant festival spirit.

Police staff from the local BNP-6 unit built this unique shrine years ago and still handle every detail today. During Navratri, the place fills up fast. Each year, they install a fresh idol of the goddess and host elaborate rituals that light up the devotion of visitors from near and far.

What stands out most? The temple grounds boast 121 kalash—sacred urns symbolizing fulfilled wishes. Devotees add these pots one by one whenever their prayers come true, building the collection over time. “Each kalash marks a wish granted,” a temple priest shared with . “This spot runs on the dedication of police personnel, and the faith here never wavers.”

Multiple priests lead the ceremonies, with BNP-6’s Jaykant Mandal taking the helm for this Durga Puja. He personally handles the daily worship, including the heartfelt ‘Shapatnik Puja’ that shows his own deep connection to the goddess.

Shardiya Navratri kicked off on September 22 and runs through October 2, wrapping up with the grand Dussehra festival. Over these nine days, people across India celebrate the nine powerful forms of Goddess Durga, each bringing a unique spiritual energy like strength and wisdom.

On day three, which falls today, worshippers focus on Maa Chandraghanta, the fierce warrior goddess who stands for courage and protection. She appears as a calm yet mighty version of Parvati, right after her wedding to Lord Shiva, with a half-moon bell glowing on her forehead.

This festival, held in the bright half of the Ashwin month, recalls Goddess Durga’s legendary win over the demon Mahishasura—a timeless story of good triumphing over evil. From fasting to chanting prayers, devotees flock to temples nationwide, seeking Durga’s blessings for peace and prosperity in their lives. In Muzaffarpur, this police-built haven adds an extra layer of inspiration to the nationwide joy.
