Political slugfest in Bengal over Trinamool leader Kalyan Banerjee’s remarks linking PM Modi with Delhi blast

A heavyweight political clash erupted in West Bengal on Saturday after Trinamool Congress MP and senior lawyer Kalyan Banerjee made a bold claim linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a brutal car blast in Delhi that killed 12 people.
Banerjee said that the deadly explosion near Red Fort Metro Station on Nov. 10 was planned “just a day before the second phase of the Bihar Assembly polls” to stir sympathy for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He accused Modi of orchestrating the attack to help the BJP win state elections.
On Friday, after the BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance won a sweeping victory in Bihar, Modi told the media that the Bihar results paved the way for a BJP win in West Bengal’s 2026 assembly polls. He pledged to end “Jungle Raj” in West Bengal by 2026, promising more democratic governance.
Re‑reacting, Banerjee blasted Modi. “The Prime Minister has sabotaged India’s democratic spirit,” he said. “He planted bombs near Red Fort and created chaos just before the Bihar election. He has built a ‘Jungle Raj’ across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. West Bengal, however, remains peaceful and will stand up to the BJP again in 2026.”
Jagannath Chattopadhyay, BJP’s state general secretary, said the tension reflects a larger battle over how loudly Trinamool leaders can criticize the national government. “Every time they sling slurs against the Prime Minister, the BJP gains popularity here,” he added. “The people still feel close to the ruling party.”
The debate highlights the growing divide between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, especially ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections. The parties’ leaders shoulder a high‑stakes critique as the region readies itself for a fiercely contested political showdown.
