In Tirupati, Sri Venkateswara University has suspended a psychology professor after students said he allowed seniors to rag them during an interaction session.
The university’s inquiry committee found that Prof. S. Viswanatha Reddy, who heads the department of Psychology, behaved inappropriately with new first‑semester M.S.C. students. The students claimed he left them alone in a classroom where older students harassed them, and that he didn’t keep faculty supervision in place.
Vice‑Chancellor Dr. Tata Narsinga Rao issued a notice that the professor remains suspended until the disciplinary case is finished. The order also bars him from leaving Tirupati during this period.
The incident began when the affected students, along with parents and student‑leader groups, went to the SV University police station to demand swift action. Tension rose as a large crowd gathered there. Police filed a complaint and registered a case, opening an investigation into the professor’s conduct and any senior students involved in the alleged ragging.
Students say they already filed a formal complaint with university authorities three days before the police visit, but no action was taken then. They also voiced fears of pressure to stay silent about the harassment.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the university will decide whether the professor’s suspension will be lifted or if further disciplinary measures will follow.
