Youths Clash with Police in Manipur’s Churachandpur Over Arrests Linked to PM Modi Visit Decorations
In Manipur’s Churachandpur district, tensions boiled over on Sunday as a large group of youths protested the arrest of two people. The clash with security forces near the local police station turned chaotic, with stone-pelting and road blockades adding to the drama in this hill district.
It all started on the evening of September 11, when a group of youths allegedly vandalized banners, cutouts, and decorations set up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. These setups were in Phailien and Pearsonsmun areas, just 5 km from the Churachandpur police station. Police quickly arrived at the scene, confronted the group, and detained several individuals for the damage.
Most of those detained got released after questioning, but two youths faced formal arrest. This sparked outrage among local youths, who gathered in big numbers outside the police station. They shouted slogans like "Release Our Two Friends" and demanded the immediate and unconditional freedom of the arrested duo.
Social media videos captured the tense standoff: protesters blocked roads, faced off against security personnel, and even threw stones when police tried to disperse the crowd. Officials say they’re working hard to calm things down and prevent the situation from worsening.
This unrest comes right after PM Modi’s first visit to Manipur since the ethnic clashes between Kuki-Zo tribals and Meiteis erupted in May 2023. On Saturday, the Prime Minister held rallies at Churachandpur’s peace ground and Imphal’s historic Kangla Fort. From these spots, he launched 31 development projects worth a whopping Rs 8,500 crore.
In Churachandpur, PM Modi laid foundation stones for initiatives valued at over Rs 7,300 crore. In Imphal, he inaugurated projects worth more than Rs 1,200 crore. He also met with displaced families—men, women, and children—from the violence-affected areas, who are now in relief camps in both locations.
PM Modi urged everyone, from communities to organizations, to join hands with the government. His message? Help restore peace and normalcy so these big development projects can move forward and benefit Manipur’s people. As the state grapples with ongoing tensions, locals hope for quick resolution to get back on track.
