7 FDNY firefighters injured after jaw-dropping NYC car explosion blasts fireball into night sky
Seven Bronx firefighters were hurt when a car on Intervale Avenue blew up while the crew was fighting a fire in front of a building at the corner of Intervale and Kelly Street. The blast happened at about 7:06 p.m. Wednesday night, a time when Metro‑NY firefighters were already on the scene.
The explosion created a towering fireball that swept across the street and filled the air with smoke. A live video taken by bystanders shows the flames and the thick smoke plume rising high above the block, giving the incident a dramatic look that was shared widely on social media.
FDNY officials said seven smoke‑eaters were injured before the firefighters got out of the blast zone. Three of the crew members were transported to Jacobi Hospital for evaluation. The victims’ injuries are still being assessed, and the fire department did not yet release details about the severity of the injuries. No injuries among nearby pedestrians were reported by the NYPD.
By 8:19 p.m., the fire was under control, but an investigation into the cause of the explosion is still underway. The fire department is working with other city agencies to determine what sparked the detonation and if any forensic evidence can explain how the vehicle went up in flames.
Residents in the Longwood neighborhood were seen rushing from the street in the video, and police had to clear the area to keep people safe. The blast started while the firefighters were engaged in extinguishing a different fire, so the crew was caught off guard.
For now, the main focus is on the safety of the injured firefighters and the ongoing investigation. The FDNY, in coordination with the NYPD and the Fire Investigation Services, have not released the investigation findings, but officials are continuing to review all evidence.
