Punjab Police recently cracked down on a major hawala network in Kapurthala, seizing over Rs 2.05 crore in hawala money. The bust came from a tip on backward linkages, leading to the arrest of an associate tied to a Ludhiana-based hawala operator. Kapurthala Police led the operation, acting fast to disrupt the illegal funding scheme.
DGP Gaurav Yadav praised the team’s quick work, saying they zeroed in on the Ludhiana operator and nabbed the key associate handling hawala transactions. “This shows our commitment to breaking these networks,” he noted.
Just last week, Kapurthala Police uncovered a big online cyber-fraud scam in Phagwara. They filed a case at the Cyber Crime station and arrested 38 suspects. Officers also grabbed 40 laptops, 67 mobile phones, and Rs 10 lakh in suspected hawala money connected to the fraud. DGP Yadav stressed that investigations continue to root out the full gang behind these crimes. Punjab Police stays focused on dismantling organized financial networks, stopping cyber fraud, and protecting people’s hard-earned cash.
In another big win, Amritsar Commissionerate Police smashed a cross-border arms smuggling ring earlier this month. As part of efforts to make Punjab safer, they arrested six members and recovered six high-tech weapons along with Rs 5.75 lakh in hawala money.
The suspects include Pargat Singh from Vaan Tara Singh village in Tarn Taran, Ajaybir Singh (aka Ajay) from Gali Punjab Singh in Amritsar, Karanbir Singh (aka Karan) from Pal Avenue in Amritsar, Ram from Pal Avenue, Mehakpreet Singh (aka Rohit) from Officer Colony in Amritsar, and Dinesh Kumar from Adampur in Jalandhar.
Police found one 9mm Glock pistol, three .30 bore PX5 pistols, one .32 bore pistol, and one .30 bore pistol in their possession. DGP Yadav explained that Mehakpreet Singh ran the syndicate under orders from foreign handlers using social media. Investigators made several recoveries as they pieced together the operation step by step.
These actions highlight Punjab Police’s ongoing drive against hawala operations, cyber fraud, and arms smuggling to keep the state secure.
