On Thursday, a trial court in Ropar, Punjab, ordered that Navneet Chaturvedi be kept in police custody until October 23. Chaturvedi is the main suspect in a case that involves forged nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha by‑poll that was held on October 24.
The allegation is that Chaturvedi used a fake signature and the name of Dinesh Chadha, a sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ropar, when filing his own nomination as an independent candidate. First, he submitted a set of papers on October 6 naming 10 AAP MLAs as his proposers, but it turned out they did not sign any of the documents. A second set was filed on October 13 that included forged signatures of all 10 MLAs.
Because of the forgery charges, Punjab police arrested Chaturvedi in Sector 3, Chandigarh, after a 28‑hour standoff with Chandigarh police over who should hold him. The case was registered in Ropar after several AAP members complained that their signatures had been copied.
Chaturvedi, who claims to be the president of the Janata Party and is from Jaipur, has also petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court for protection from arrest. The court, after hearing both sides, denied any immediate orders and asked for a response before proceeding. In his petition, the accused asked for a 10‑day grant of liberty and for the police to bring the first information report (FIR) about him to court. He also said Punjab police tried to abduct him on Tuesday.
Advocates for the state requested the court move Chaturvedi’s custody back to Punjab police and to start actions for contempt and departmental discipline against those who ignored court orders. The case is still pending, with more paperwork and investigations to come.
