Rahul Gandhi condemns killing of youth in Raebareli

Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader in India’s Lok Sabha, used an X post to criticize the ruling BJP after a Dalit youth was stabbed to death in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. The victim, Hariom Valmiki, was allegedly beaten by a mob that mistook him for a thief.

In his comment, Gandhi said the killing was “the murder of humanity, the Constitution, and justice.” He accused the BJP government of backing mobs that target Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, backward classes and other vulnerable groups. “Today, those whose voices are weak are being singled out,” he wrote, adding that bulldozers now replace the law and fear has replaced justice.

The Congress Party also released a statement condemning the “brutal and cruel murder” of Hariom Valmiki. The party said India’s constitution guarantees equal security and rights to every citizen. It linked the Raebareli case to a rise in crimes against minorities, citing other high‑profile incidents such as the Hathras rape case, the Unnao assault, the death of graduate student Rohith Vemula, and the brutal beating of Dalits in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

“The pattern is a crime against Dalit communities and a stain on our society,” the statement said. “All these acts reveal a growing indifference by the administration and the ruling party.” The Congress called for justice for Hariom’s family and reiterated India’s future relies on equality and the Constitution, not mob rule.

Police have already taken steps. Three officers, including a sub‑inspector, were suspended. Assistant Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Sinha confirmed that five suspects were arrested and the police are searching for the rest.

Hariom’s widow, Pinky, appealed for government help. “My husband was beaten to death. Whoever killed him should face justice,” she said. “I need government support; I have a daughter,” she added.

The incident adds a new chapter to the BJP’s controversial record since taking power in 2014, raising questions about law and order in India’s most populous democracy.
