Rahul Gandhi visited the flood-ravaged areas of Punjab on Monday to connect with families hit hard by the disaster. As the Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, he stepped in to assess relief efforts and listen to people’s struggles firsthand.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress party shared how Rahul Gandhi met affected families in Punjab’s flood-hit regions. The devastating Punjab floods have wrecked lives, destroying property and forcing thousands into relief camps. “The situation is dire,” the party said, urging everyone to rally support. “Every Congress worker stands with Punjab—we must unite to beat this crisis.”
During his trip to Gurdaspur, Rahul Gandhi talked with farmers who lost everything to the severe flooding. Congress leader Pargat Singh, who joined him, praised Gandhi’s empathy. “Rahul ji truly gets Punjab’s pain,” Singh told reporters. He added that Gandhi would head to Ajnala next, starting with a visit to a gurdwara before chatting with farmers, workers, and locals.
Singh didn’t hold back on tough questions either. He raised concerns about the Rs 1,200 crore State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for Punjab. “Where did that money go? No one’s talking about it,” he said. “Right now, we need to focus on helping families who lost their homes and belongings.”
Former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu also lauded the visit, calling it a big boost for Punjab Congress workers. “He’s our top leader and kept pushing us to keep up the good work,” she said. “Seeing a senior figure notice your efforts motivates everyone—even those at home—to step up.”
But Sidhu slammed the state government over flood preparedness. “Why allow houses so close to rivers? And those who released water all at once should face punishment,” she questioned, highlighting the need for better disaster management in Punjab.
The floods have taken a heavy toll. Punjab’s latest report shows 1,98,525 hectares of crops damaged, with the worst hits in Gurdaspur (40,169 hectares), Fazilka (25,182 hectares), Kapurthala (17,574 hectares), Patiala (17,690 hectares), Ferozepur (17,257 hectares), and Tarn Taran (12,828 hectares). Sadly, the death toll from Punjab floods stands at 56, according to Revenue, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh.
As Punjab battles these floods, leaders like Rahul Gandhi are calling for unity and action to support the victims.
