Back to midfield, Bayern’s Kimmich turns into Nagelsmann’s flagman

Germany’s national football team is shaking things up under new coach Julian Nagelsmann. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, Nagelsmann is focusing on a stronger defense and a more aggressive midfield to boost Germany’s chances.

One big change is in the midfield. Joshua Kimmich, the star Bayern Munich player, is returning to his natural position in the midfield after mainly playing as a fullback lately. Fans can expect to see Kimmich take charge of controlling the game from the middle.

The defense is also getting a makeover. Frankfurt’s Nnamdi Collins, a new face to the national team, is likely to start on the right side. Instead of pushing forward too much, Collins is expected to focus more on solid defending, helping to strengthen the back line.

Nagelsmann’s new strategy was influenced by Germany’s recent loss to Italy in the UEFA Nations League. After leading 3-0, Germany lost their control and the game. Nagelsmann believes this showed the need for more resilience and better game management.

As he marks two years as Germany’s head coach, Nagelsmann is confident about winning the next World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026. “Winning the title is not arrogant—it’s a natural goal,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of turning up the heat on top players like Leroy Sane. Sane, who recently moved from Bayern Munich to Galatasaray, needs to raise his performance, especially since the Turkish league isn’t considered one of Europe’s top leagues. Nagelsmann made it clear that there’s still hope for Sane to contribute to Germany’s success.

With just a few months left, Nagelsmann’s new approach is seen as Germany’s last chance to get things right. There’s little time for more experiments, so the team must start strong from the very first match.

Germany’s coach and players are eager to show their improved skills and aim for a successful run in the next big tournament. Fans are hopeful that these tactical changes will help Germany regain their winning form.
