Jaipur, Dec 8 (LatestNewsX) – Rajasthan’s government has taken a significant administrative action now that the terms of most Panchayat Samiti Pradhans and Zila Parishad chiefs are coming to an end.
Rather than renew the terms or hand the positions over to the incumbents, the government decided that Sub‑Divisional Magistrates will assume control of Panchayat Samitis, while District Collectors will act as administrators of District Councils.
Per the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department’s directives, SDMs will be appointed to all Panchayat Samitis whose terms expire by December 11. District Collectors will choose which officer will manage each area.
In total, 222 Panchayat Samitis across 21 districts—including Udaipur, Tonk, Rajsamand, and Sikar—are scheduled to finish their terms this month.
Previously, after term expirations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota Municipal Corporations, the state had appointed Divisional Commissioners as administrators.
Now, District Collectors will take charge in places such as Jaisalmer, Ajmer, Banswara, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jhalawar, Jalore, and others.
This shift departs from the earlier practice where outgoing Sarpanches were placed in charge after election delays in several Panchayats, and temporary committees were set up to keep governance running.
Pradhans had requested extensions similar to those granted to Sarpanches and brought the issue before the Panchayati Raj Minister and the Chief Minister, but the government dismissed the appeal and reverted to the old method of appointing administrative officers.
The new arrangement will hold until fresh elections are held.
