Rajasthan’s big step in healthcare: Assembly greenlights new super-specialty medical institute in Jaipur
In a major boost for medical services, the Rajasthan Assembly has passed the Rajasthan Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Jaipur Bill, 2025. This happened on Monday through a quick voice vote, marking an exciting upgrade for the state’s health sector.
Deputy Chief Minister Premchand Bairwa shared the good news, saying RIMS will deliver top-notch super-specialty medical services. “This institute will put Rajasthan on the map as a leader in healthcare,” he added. Bairwa explained that RIMS aims to become a center of excellence, just like the famous AIIMS, by blending advanced treatment, cutting-edge research, and quality medical education.
Remember that announcement in the 2024-25 Rajasthan budget? The state government promised to transform the Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS) into RIMS, with a total investment of Rs 750 crore spread over phases. This move shows Rajasthan’s commitment to building world-class medical facilities.
RIMS will operate as an independent body and university. It gets the power to grant degrees, diplomas, and certifications under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. Expect state-of-the-art setups in key areas like cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, urology, plastic surgery, endocrinology, nephrology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, and even transplant units. On top of that, it will offer high-level referral hospital services, postgraduate training in modern medicine and AYUSH systems, and focused research on health issues unique to Rajasthan. Teacher training and innovative programs will be at the heart of its work.
Who’s in charge? The Chief Secretary will lead as Chairman, with support from top officials in Medical Education and Finance, the RUHS Vice Chancellor, and experts from big names like AIIMS, PGIMER Chandigarh, JIPMER Puducherry, IISc Bengaluru, IIT Jodhpur, IIM Udaipur, IIHMR Jaipur, and Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai. A dedicated Governing Body will handle policies and keep everything on track.
To kick things off, the government has allocated Rs 100 crore for building infrastructure right away. Plus, there’s Rs 5 crore every year for day-to-day operations. A special financial fund and committee will make sure all funds are used transparently.
RUHS’s affiliated colleges will now come under RIMS. Current RUHS staff can pick between sticking with state government jobs or joining RIMS. Bairwa highlighted exciting partnerships with global institutions for research and international student exchanges.
“This will set new standards in Rajasthan healthcare and turn the state into a hotspot for medical tourism,” Bairwa said enthusiastically. With RIMS, Rajasthan is gearing up to attract patients from across India and beyond, promising better health outcomes for everyone.
