Authorities in Jaipur uncovered six mobile phones hidden inside the Central Jail during a surprise search on Thursday, spotlighting ongoing security challenges in Indian prisons.
The two-hour operation kicked off at 12:30 p.m. and targeted high-security wards 3, 5, and 6. In ward 3, officials found a phone and SIM card with undertrial prisoner Danish Mohammad, also known as Makkhi. Ward 6 turned up an abandoned device, while in ward 5, three convicted inmates—Gograj Garhwal, Rohitash alias Rawat, and Brahmaswaroop Bunkar—had phones in their possession.
Jail guard Rajan Meena quickly reported the finds to Lalkothi police station, leading to an FIR against the four prisoners. Police now have the seized devices for deeper investigation into how they got inside and if inmates used them to connect with outside criminal networks.
Mobile phones in prisons like Jaipur Central Jail create real risks. Inmates can use them to link up with gangs, tamper with witnesses, or plot escapes, experts warn. Despite frequent raids, these smuggling incidents keep happening, fueling worries about weak security measures.
Jail officials point to possible culprits like visitors, dishonest staff, or even rare drone deliveries as ways phones and SIM cards sneak in. They admit it’s a persistent issue, even with tight oversight.
This isn’t the first time Jaipur Central Jail has dealt with mobile phone smuggling—similar busts have popped up before. Police say their probe will zero in on entry points and any external ties. In response, the jail plans to ramp up searches soon to crack down on electronic devices inside.
