Samsung to unveil tri-fold phone at APEC summit

Samsung Electronics is set to reveal its latest innovation—a groundbreaking tri-fold phone—at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, later this October 2025. According to a report from Pulse, the English arm of Maeil Business Newspaper Korea, this device aims to blend the best of smartphones and tablets into one portable gadget.

The tri-fold phone folds twice, creating three panels for a compact design. It starts with a 6.5-inch outer display, much like Samsung’s popular Galaxy Fold series, and unfolds to a spacious 10 inches—perfect for bigger screens on the go. Samsung already snagged KC certification for the model back in August, and they’re planning limited production of just tens of thousands of units. Expect sales to target high-income buyers in select markets, with a steep price tag of over 3 million won, or about $2,135 USD. The launch could happen before the year ends, the report notes.

Industry experts say Samsung chose the APEC summit for the big reveal more for brand buzz and strategic positioning than massive sales rollout. While Huawei beat them to the punch with a dual-fold phone, Samsung shines in building polished products, scaling up manufacturing, and reaching global audiences with foldable smartphones.

This tri-fold launch arrives amid sluggish global smartphone sales. Analysts view it as Samsung’s push to spark fresh demand. The phone’s fold-out setup delivers tablet-like multitasking and shines for artificial intelligence (AI) features, making it ideal for productivity and smart services.

Samsung packed the device with homegrown tech, including advanced displays, sturdy hinges, ultra-thin glass, and efficient batteries, all developed alongside local partners.

The move should boost Samsung’s Mobile Experience division, which is counting on foldables and AI-powered smartphones as key growth engines. Just look at the recent Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, unveiled in July—they racked up 1.04 million pre-orders in Korea in one week alone. In Europe, the Fold7 sold over 250,000 units in four weeks, more than twice as fast as its predecessor, the Fold6.

Samsung’s also ramping up AI integration, embedding Google Gemini into its Galaxy lineup for handy tools like image editing and personalized assistants.
