In Pakistan’s volatile Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a wave of deadly attacks by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed the lives of 12 soldiers since September 10. Local media reports highlight the intense clashes that shook the region, with the Pakistan military confirming the losses in South Waziristan district.
The military’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) shared details of two fierce firefights between September 10 and 13, where soldiers bravely exchanged fire with TTP militants. This comes amid rising terrorism threats in Pakistan, as the group ramps up its assaults.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif didn’t hold back in his response. On Saturday, he pledged to hit back at terrorists with “full force,” vowing no let-up in the fight against TTP and similar outfits. Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Bannu that day, joining a key meeting on counter-terrorism strategies. They also attended funeral prayers for the fallen soldiers from the South Waziristan operations, showing solidarity with the troops.
Sharif pointed fingers across the border, claiming TTP leaders and their helpers run operations from Afghan soil. “We’ve told the Afghan Interim Government to pick a side—back the Khawarij terrorists or stand with Pakistan,” he said. He raised alarms about Afghan nationals sneaking into attacks and pushed for quick deportation of illegal Afghan residents in Pakistan to curb the risks.
Good news on the counter-side: Pakistani forces struck back hard. Reports from The Express Tribune say security operations killed 35 TTP terrorists in retaliation. Sharif and Munir also stopped by Bannu Combined Military Hospital to meet injured soldiers and got a full update on the security situation from the Peshawar Corps Commander.
This isn’t the first blow this month. Just earlier, six soldiers lost their lives in a TTP assault on the Federal Constabulary (FC) Headquarters in Bannu district, underscoring the ongoing battle against terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
As tensions simmer with Afghanistan and TTP activities, Pakistan’s leaders remain committed to rooting out these threats and protecting their borders.
