New Delhi, Dec 11 (LatestNewsX) – Delhi Police announced that they had dismantled a large scheme centred on demonetised currency, taking into custody four men who were accused of trading in old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes while misleading people into thinking the bills could be exchanged at the Reserve Bank of India. The raid, carried out by the Police Post WPIA team under Ashok Vihar police station, recovered demonetised cash worth Rs 3.59 crore and seized two vehicles that had been used for the operation. After receiving a tip from Sub Inspector Rohit Chahar on Dec 10, the raiding squad—comprising SI Mohit Yadav, HC Dravesh, HC Pawan, HC Manoj and HC Ashwani—captured the suspects near Gate No. 4 of Shalimar Bagh metro station. The four apprehended men were identified as Harsh (22), Tek Chand Thakur (also known as Vinod)—39, Lakshya (28) and Vipin Kumar (38); all are Delhi residents. In a statement, the police said, “The gang was duping people by offering old notes at throwaway prices and falsely claiming that the currency could be exchanged at the RBI on the basis of Aadhaar. All arrested accused admitted they were chasing quick and illegal profits.” Investigators noted that the men had been in touch with two other people, Ashish and Tarun, since 2021. The pair supposedly told them they possessed large amounts of demonetised currency and offered commissions for helping circulate or exchange the money. The suspects said they carried out the work based on instructions received through mobile phones. Authorities explained that financial strain had driven some of the participants into the scheme: Lakshya, who plans to marry in February 2026, had taken out a wedding loan, and Tek Chand was burdened with household and schooling costs. Vipin, employed in the private sector, was also looking for fast gains. The Ashok Vihar police station has filed charges under Sections 318(4)/61(2)/62/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 5 and 7 of the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017. DCP Bhisham Singh said that investigations are continuing to locate other members of the operation.
