Thiruvananthapuram, October 7 – Tension flared again in the Kerala Assembly as the Congress‑led opposition dug deep into the Sabarimala gold‑plating scandal. For the second consecutive day, lawmakers clashed over the High Court’s claim that gold meant for the Sabarimala sanctum was stolen and sold at a higher price.
From the opening, Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan called the Court’s decision “shocking” and demanded the resignation of Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan, the dismissal of the Devaswom Board and a clear statement from the government in the House. “We need answers,” he said, echoing Monday’s protests.
The government’s reply was swift. State Law Minister P. Rajeev accused the opposition of rejecting the Court’s authority, labeling the move as politically motivated. “The government welcomes investigations,” he added, “but the opposition refuses even a probe under judicial supervision.” State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M.B. Rajesh said the opposition’s actions stemmed from frustration over recent court setbacks, painting their protests as an obstruction of parliamentary process.
Speaker A.N. Shamseer tried to steer the session to the scheduled Question Hour, but the opposition’s rally forced the hour‑long discussion to be adjourned. When the House reconvened, the protests continued, forcing the Speaker to rush through the day’s agenda and adjourn the session early.
In the midst of the debate, former Devaswom Board president N. Vasu stepped forward. He clarified that he had no direct contact with Unnikrishnan Potti, the figure under investigation, and that key decisions about temple doors and gold plating were made before his tenure. “I was not in the office when the panels were taken away. Let the probe uncover how gold became copper,” Vasu said. He also mentioned receiving an email from Potti, but stressed that no complaint or shortage had ever been recorded against him.
The house remains on edge as more details unfold in the Sabarimala gold‑plating case, a dispute that continues to stir political debate and public scrutiny across Kerala.
