Sabarimala gold theft case: Kerala assembly witnesses disruptions on fourth consecutive day

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s state capital, the legislative assembly erupted in protest for the fourth day straight as opposition leader VD Satheesan rallied his colleagues against the ruling party.
Satheesan slammed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, saying the CM had “body‑shamed” an assembly member and that the Speaker was unfairly intimidating the opposition. He added that the non‑cooperation protest would continue until the government’s demands are met.
The row comes after the Travancore Devaswom Board suspended B. Murari Babu, the Deputy Devaswom Commissioner in Haripad. The suspension follows an alleged false report from 2019 about gold plating at Sabarimala—a case that has already attracted high‑level scrutiny.
B. Murari Babu was accused of filing a report that wrongly listed gold‑plated idols near Sabarimala’s sanctum as copper sheets. The Board calls the error a serious administrative lapse and is conducting a full inquiry.
VD Satheesan claims that state officials and the Devaswom Board are involved in the Sabarimala gold‑theft investigation. He questioned why the board has not charged Unnikrishnan Potty, a former helper and sponsor of the gold‑plating works. “The board knew about the issue in 2022 but did nothing,” he said, demanding the resignation of the Devaswom Board minister and the board authorities. He vowed to keep striking both inside and outside the assembly.
On Monday, the Kerala High Court convened a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged gold theft. The SIT, headed by former Superintendent S. Sasidharan and overseen by Crime Branch chief ADGP H Venkatesh, will keep the investigation confidential. The team will include cyber experts and three inspectors.
This growing controversy highlights the deepening distrust between the opposition and the ruling party as Kerala’s golden‑contested temple case continues to unfold.
