Guwahati, Dec 4 (LatestNewsX) – Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, celebrated Indian Navy Day by lauding the force’s courage, discipline and steadfast commitment to guarding the nation’s maritime borders.
On X he posted the following tribute:
> “On #NavyDay, we salute the courage, discipline and unmatched commitment of our Naval warriors who keep India’s seas safe, strong and sovereign. From our vast coastline to the farthest oceans, our Nation stands proud of their unwavering service and sacrifice.”
Sarma’s words joined a chorus of appreciation heard all across the country, underscoring the navy’s crucial role in maintaining sea‑lane security, protecting trade routes and delivering aid during crises in the Indo‑Pacific.
Navy Day is marked each year on December 4 to commemorate the daring Operation Trident of the 1971 Indo‑Pak war, when Indian missile boats struck Karachi harbour in a night attack that dealt a decisive blow to Pakistan’s naval forces. The celebration has since become a homage to the bravery of navy personnel and a spotlight on the service’s expanding strategic reach.
Over the past decades, the Indian Navy has evolved into a modern blue‑water force, capable of long‑range deployments. Its responsibilities now include safeguarding a 7,500‑kilometre coastline, protecting the country’s island territories, securing shipping lanes, and deepening maritime partnerships through joint exercises and defence cooperation.
Beyond combat duties, the navy spearheads essential humanitarian missions, such as evacuations and disaster relief during cyclones, tsunamis and international emergencies.
Recent focus on indigenisation under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” agenda has seen warships, submarines and maritime systems being designed and built in domestic shipyards.
According to officials, Sarma’s message reflects a broad recognition of the navy’s pivotal contribution to national security and its growing influence in the geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean Region.
