Satellite verification of groundnut crop registrations: Farmers asked not to worry over SMS alerts

Gujarat’s farmers, take note! The state government is making things easier and more transparent for registering under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme, especially for groundnut procurement. They’ve rolled out satellite image-based verification and digital crop surveys to ensure only genuine cultivators get the benefits.

In a recent check, less than 10% of the registered plots turned out to have no groundnut crops. Officials quickly sent SMS alerts to farmers linked to those survey numbers, but they’re stressing: no need to panic! If you’ve actually sown groundnut on your land, just head to your village gram sevak for a quick verification.

You can also double-check your details with the village surveyor or grab the free Digital Crop Survey–Gujarat mobile app to do the survey yourself. It’s super straightforward and helps speed things up.

Dr. Anju Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, shared some good news: the registration deadline for MSP on groundnut, moong, urad, and soybean has been pushed to September 22. This gives more farmers a chance to join in. As of September 17, over 8.79 lakh farmers signed up for groundnut, 66,000 for soybean, 5,000 for urad, and more than 1,100 for moong.

If you got an SMS but know you’ve grown groundnut, relax—procurement won’t start until field teams verify everything on the ground. The lists of flagged survey numbers are already with district offices for a thorough cross-check.

To help out, the Agriculture Department is running training sessions on the mobile app via the Vande Gujarat channel. Pro tip for farmers: snap a geo-tagged photo of your crop as proof—it’ll make the process smoother. As Dr. Sharma put it, “The message is clear: Genuine groundnut cultivators need not be anxious. Your produce will be bought at MSP once verification wraps up.”

Gujarat boasts around 90 lakh farmers and farm workers in the 2024–25 season, making up about 65% of the state’s workforce. It’s a powerhouse for both food crops and cash crops. During the Kharif season, key ones include bajra (pearl millet), maize, paddy (rice), groundnut (peanut), and cotton. In Rabi, you’ll see wheat, mustard, cumin, and veggies, plus sugarcane in some districts.

This tech-driven approach is all about supporting real farmers and boosting Gujarat’s agriculture scene—stay tuned for more updates on MSP schemes and crop procurement!
