The Indian Supreme Court has sent notices to the social‑media platform X and to the BJP unit in Assam after a complaint about an AI‑generated video that stirred up unrest. The video shows a scene in which Muslims are said to take over the state if the BJP loses the next assembly election.
The court, heard by Judges Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, issued notices to X and the BJP‑Assam unit on Tuesday. The appeal asks that X take down the video immediately to stop further communal tensions.
Advocate Nizam Pasha, representing the complainant, said the clip was posted right before the elections. “The video shows people with skullcaps and beards taking over the state,” he told the bench. “We want the Supreme Court to punish those who created this hateful content.”
Another lawyer, Lzafeer Ahmad, filed the case on behalf of the court’s petition. He described the clip posted on September 15 by the BJP‑Assam unit. It shows Muslims capturing major landmarks such as tea estates, Guwahati airport, Rang Ghar and government land. The lawyer argued that the BJP‑Assam unit, being part of the ruling party, must uphold India’s secular constitution and cannot spread messages that vilify a community.
“India’s Constitution demands that every elected government stays neutral on religion, caste, race and gender,” Ahmad said. He added that even private citizens cannot make communal speeches or spread hate. The video, shared from the official X handle of the BJP‑Assam unit, was reposted 6,100 times, liked 19,000 times and viewed 4.6 million times by September 18.
The petition, filed as a public-interest litigation, calls for the video’s removal to prevent more communal disharmony, unrest and enmity. The Supreme Court’s actions may set a precedent for how social‑media platforms handle hate speech and AI‑generated content in India.
