Sambalpur, Odisha – Police in Sambalpur arrested two men who scammed roughly 2,000 residents out of about Rs 2 crore. The fraudsters posed as recruiters for sweeping and sanitation jobs at local government offices and used a fake company called RMAX Pvt Ltd to lure victims.
The accused are 32‑year‑old Samrat Ray (aka Rahul) from the Kshetrajpur area and 34‑year‑old Padmalaya Tandi (aka Padmavati) of Burla. They operated out of Sambalpur district, holding community meetings to gather money from anyone who wanted a job. Each participant paid Rs 12,000, while the pair promised a daily wage of Rs 400 and official appointment letters.
Sambalpur Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo explained that the department received tips about the scam and kept a close watch on the two men for a couple of months. The police carried out a raid at a local job fair, detaining Samrat and Padmalaya as they were arranging another meeting.
During questioning, the officers learned the scam had started in October 2024. The duo used the fake company name to claim it had been sanctioned by governmental bodies, but no such approval exists. Police recovered Rs 62 lakh and two vehicles from the suspects’ possession, evidence that the fraud was large‑scale and organized.
The Sambalpur police remain on high alert, warning citizens to verify any job offers and keep documents in their possession. Authorities are working to trace other victims and dismantle the network behind the RMAX fraud scheme.
