Securing dignity of nation in merciless terrains, unforgiving climates: Amit Shah, J&K L-G greet ITBP on raising day
On Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha welcomed the Indo‑Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on its 64 th foundation day — a salute to the force that guards the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China.
Shah posted a brief note on X. “Greetings to ITBP personnel on their Raising Day. You secure our nation’s dignity in tough terrain and harsh climates. The Himveers of the ITBP have set glorious precedents in courage and commitment to the country,” he wrote. He also paid tribute to the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sinha echoed the sentiment. “Greetings to all @ITBP_official personnel and their families on Raising Day. Your unwavering courage, dedication and self‑less service in safeguarding our borders and ensuring national security is truly commendable. We honor the martyrs who gave their lives in the line of duty,” he added.
The ITBP was raised shortly after the 1962 war with China, on 24 October 1962, to protect the LAC. It began with four battalions and handled intelligence gathering, conventional and guerrilla warfare, and improved communication along India’s northern frontier. Over the years, the force expanded—adding nine service battalions, four specialist units and two training centers in 1978.
The ITBP also fought in the 1965 and 1971 wars against Pakistan and played a key role in security for the 1982 Asian Games, the 7th Summit of the Non‑Aligned Movement and the 1983 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
For the 64th anniversary, both leaders highlighted the ITBP’s continued commitment to national security and thanked the force’s men and women for their dedication.
