New Delhi, Oct 18 – Indian politician and former UN diplomat Dr Shashi Tharoor toured the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Ad He visited the temple, calling it an “extraordinary experience” and a “remarkable structure” that goes beyond simple worship.
Tharoor highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in making the project a reality. He said Modi worked closely with UAE officials to bring the temple to life, “fulfilling the dreams of many Hindus in the region.” The ministry’s cooperation helped secure the land and funding needed for the complex.
The temple sits about 90 miles from Dubai and 60 miles from Abu Dhabi, nestled in the desert. Tharoor posted a short video on X with Swami Brahma Vihari Das, the temple’s head, where the politician shares his impressions. He praised the design features that keep visitors comfortable in over‑50 degree heat, including heat‑resistant tiles and sand‑free columns that are protected by surrounding buildings.
Key elements inside the mandir include the Wall of Harmony at the entrance, the Abhishek Mandapam, and statues of seven major deities. Tharoor noted how the craftsmen added stones from across the Middle East to pay tribute to the UAE’s seven emirates. The temple also opens with a 15‑minute animated digital cinema that Tharoor described as a “fairy tale” experience.
Speaking of unity, Tharoor compared the temple to a “microcosm of the unity of creation.” He recalled his UN days, where he championed shared humanity, and said the complex embodies that idea. He thanked Pramukh Swami Maharaj for the original vision and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed for insisting on a grand design that reflects the region’s hospitality.
“You saw how inclusive the UAE is,” Tharoor said. “My team, including three Muslim colleagues, faced no restrictions. We all felt the same awe.” He expressed regret at missing the Ganga Aarti ceremony, but promised to return.
For Tharoor, the BAPS Hindu Mandir is more than a temple; it’s a pilgrimage center that welcomes people of all faiths. He urged viewers to use the space to promote harmony, likening it to a candle that can spark light in dark times. He praised the UAE’s courage in fostering inclusivity and said it sets a living example worldwide.
Feeling “blessed, moved, and uplifted,” Dr Shashi Tharoor hopes this visit is only the first of many and encourages everyone to experience the “must‑see” marvel himself.
