Shashi Tharoor condemns attack on Congress MP Shafi Parambil

New Delhi, Oct 12 – Senior Congress politician Shashi Tharoor slammed a police attack on Kerala MP Shafi Parambil during a protest march in Perambra. Tharoor said the incident was “unacceptable” and called it a blow to Indian democracy.

In a post on X, Tharoor wrote that MPs—especially those in the opposition—must be able to protest without fear. He added that targeting a legislator “weakens the very foundation of democratic accountability” and that “strict action is imperative.” He will ask the parliamentary privilege panel to look into the case.

Parambil, the Vadakara MP and working president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, was hit by police while leading a march. He suffered a fractured nose and had emergency surgery in a private hospital in Kozhikode. An FIR was filed against him and 692 others, including Congress leaders, for alleged attacks on the police. A separate case lists 492 LDF workers for unlawful assembly and road blockades.

The Congress has called for statewide protests on Saturday to denounce the police brutality. Kozhikode District Congress president Adv. Praveen Kumar said a mass meeting would start at 3 pm in Perambra, with MP KC Venugopal inaugurating it.

The situation intensified after clashes between the UDF and CPM in Perambra. UDF workers protested against the police and the state government, and disturbances continued into the night. Police had to break up demonstrations and road blockades before the crowds dispersed.
