In New Delhi, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor brought together a group of US lawmakers and India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs for a key discussion on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strengthening India-US relations amid some tough challenges, like restrictions on H-1B visas, steep tariffs on Indian goods, and US sanctions on Iran’s Chabahar Port.
Tharoor pointed out something striking: the Indian-American diaspora has stayed surprisingly quiet on these issues that directly impact ties between the two countries. One Democratic congresswoman shared that she hadn’t gotten a single call from Indian-American voters pushing for policy shifts. That sparked Tharoor to call on the community to step up. “If you care about your motherland, you have to fight for it, speak for it, and press your political representatives to stand up for India,” he told after the talks.
The five-member US delegation, all Democrats and four from California, showed strong backing for the India-US partnership. They criticized some Trump-era decisions but praised India’s economic strength and the valuable role its diaspora plays in America. Tharoor noted that these lawmakers are already big fans of India and remain committed to building the relationship, even with recent hurdles.
“We had a great visit from these US Congress members,” Tharoor said. “They made it clear that American leaders in Congress value India as a strategic partner and are determined to push forward, despite setbacks like the H-1B visa issues, the 50% tariffs, and the Chabahar sanctions.”
The group also chatted about India-Sri Lanka relations and future plans, with input from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. As chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, Tharoor guided the conversation at Parliament House’s Annexe Extension Building, highlighting how everyday Indian-Americans can help shape better US policies toward India.
