US President Donald Trump is gearing up for a big meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a top military leader, calling them both “great leaders” during a chat with reporters in the Oval Office.
“We have a great leader coming—the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Field Marshal,” Trump said. “The Field Marshal is a very great guy, and so is the Prime Minister. They’re both coming, and they may be in this room right now.”
According to the White House schedule, Trump plans a private sit-down with Sharif in the Oval Office soon. Sharif heads to Washington after wrapping up at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This isn’t their first recent chat. On September 23, Sharif had an informal exchange with Trump right after the US president met with leaders from eight Islamic-Arab countries, including Pakistan. Sharif and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar joined the discussion, as the foreign minister noted in a post on X.
The conversation took a serious turn when Trump blasted Russia’s actions in the Ukraine conflict under President Vladimir Putin. “I’m very dissatisfied with what Russia is doing and what President Putin is doing,” Trump said. “I haven’t liked it at all. He’s killing people for no reason whatsoever, and they’re doing very poorly, considering they have put it all on the line.”
Trump didn’t hold back on Russia’s military struggles and economic woes. “Their economy is going to hell. They’re bombing the hell out of everything, and they’re picking up very little territory, if any. In fact, they’re losing some,” he added.
He also said the long-running war has hurt Russia’s global image badly. “I think it’s been very bad for the reputation of Russia. This war should have been over. If this were our war, we would have had it over in one, and they’re getting into their fourth year.” Trump wrapped up by saying he’s now “very disappointed” in Putin’s leadership.
