SIR in Bengal: No single deceased or duplicate voter in 2,208 booths, says ECI

Kolkata, Dec 1 – Up until the night of Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had counted 2,208 polling stations across West Bengal that were clean of any living deceased voters, duplicate entries, or voters who had relocated. An insider from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s office revealed that the district with the highest number of such pristine booths was South 24 Parganas, boasting 760, followed by Purulia with 228. Murshidabad and Malda, both predominantly minority districts, trailed closely with 226 and 216 respectively. In addition, 582 booths recorded just one instance of a deceased, duplicate, or shifted voter, while 420 booths had two such cases each. The BJP, however, raised concerns over the plausibility of these figures, urging an immediate re‑examination of the voter rolls in these locations. BJP municipal councillor Sajal Ghosh voiced skepticism, calling for an audit of the data gathered at these polling stations. Earlier that day, West Bengal Assembly’s opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari requested that the ECI review enumeration entries for the state’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted on November 26‑28. A BJP delegation led by Adhikari approached the CEO’s office with a formal complaint, demanding a thorough audit of the entries collected over those three days. “We have requested a review of the data captured by the central observers specially appointed by the ECI for West Bengal’s SIR process, utilizing advanced technology. A record 1.25 crore enumeration forms were filled in during that period, and this should be investigated as a possible scam,” Adhikari said to reporters following the submission.
